Mary J. Howell Johnson- There will be a dual service at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church today, November 9, 2016, at 12 noon for sisters Mary Jane Howell Johnson and Jessie M. Howell Washington.
Mary Jane Howell Johnson, 104, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Austinwoods Nursing Home. Mrs. Johnson was born on July 10, 1912, in Kosciusko, Miss., a daughter of Arnold and Catherine Holman Howell. She came to Campbell in 1926. She was a 1936 grauate of Campbell Memorial High School. She worked as a welder at Ravenna Arsenal during WWII. Her husband, James Johnson, whom she married on April 20, 1951, passed away on September 21, 1972. She enjoyed working various fairs alongside her husband and other family members.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her nieces and caregivers, Mattie Pearl Bell, Marthelia Allen and cousin Mercedes King. In addition, she also leaves her nephew, Larry Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and her church family at the Mt. Gilead Baptist Vhurch, where she was a faithful member and strong supporter. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Earl, Homer, Henry, and George, and sisters Ann Simms, Vernice Howell, and Amanda Bohannon. Her sister, Jessie Howell Washington passed away 3 days after her on Friday November 4, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Mary J. Johnson Scholoarship Fund, Campbell Memorial High School, 280 6th Street, Campbell, Oh. 44405. Friends may call from 11 am to 12 noon at the church.
