Joseph Savoldi Conley, Sr. of Youngstown, who transitioned this life on December 3, 2024 at Mercy Health St Elizabeth Health Center.
Mr. Conley was born on March 19, 1935, in Taft, Tennessee to Willie Joseph Burl and Lola Belle Conley. They migrated to Youngstown, Ohio from Tullahoma, TN in 1947 and initially resided in the Brier Hill neighborhood. Joseph was a graduate of The Rayen High School class of 1954, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track and held the school record in the180-yard low hurdles. Joseph also served in The United States Marine Corps 1955-1959.
Joseph was known in the community as Mr. Conley, aMath teacher, an Elementary and Middle School Principal and Superintendent of Youngstown Schools. Joseph was appointed the second African American Superintendent in Youngstown’s history following Mr. Robert Pegues, a classmate and friend. Joseph was a Baseball, Basketball, Football and Track coach, coaching little league through high school sports. His North High School players were very fond of him as a football coach and affectionally called him Mr. Con-lay. He was a member of Third Baptist Church over 75 years. Joseph received many awards and this year, 2024 was inducted into the North High School Hall of Fame.
Joseph S. Conley was a loving husband, father, uncle,and friend. His wife Vivateen Conley preceded him in death January 13, 2013. His only sister, Willie Belle Frost preceded him in death September 17, 2024, as well as his parents.
He leaves to cherish his memory 5 children, Thomas S. Conley (Lorene)of Liberty, OH, Virginia L. Jones, of San Jose, CA, Joseph S. Conley, Jr. (Gaynell) of San Antonio, TX, Willie “Timothy” Conley, I (Yvonne) of Pickerington, OH, and Paul A. Conley, Sr., (Erica) of Accokeek, MD, He also had 17grandchildren, Candice, Natasha, Jamaal, Janece, JaQuelia, Nia, Preston, Shalon, Willie T. II., Xavier, Lorneeshia, Kristen, Brittany, Jayde, Jenaya, Paul Jr. and Kyla as well as, 9 great grandchildren, Dreana, Phillip, Andre Mya, Melina, Jamaal, Justice, Jaleya and Sage also a host of other relatives and friends.
Joseph will be missed by many, but we know that he is in a better place, as in his last months he would say to his caregivers and children, “I am ready to see my Savior, Face to Face.
There will be a visitation with the family from 11:00 to 12:00 PM on Thursday , December 19, 2024 at Third Baptist Church and the service will start promptly at 12:00 PM.
